In the process of casting sulfur, the choice between pyrite or ferrous sulfide mainly depends on specific casting requirements, cost considerations, and the availability of raw materials. Here is a detailed comparison between the two:
1、 Iron sulfide (pyrite)
Definition and Characteristics:
Raw pyrite, such as pyrite, is a naturally mined sulfide mineral with the appearance of yellow cubic crystals.
It contains high levels of sulfur and iron elements, typically ranging from 45% to 50% sulfur content, and iron content is also within a similar range.
Purpose:
During the casting process, raw pyrite is often used as a sulfur enhancer to adjust the sulfur content in the molten iron.
Although sulfur is considered a harmful element in gray cast iron, increasing the sulfur content within a certain range can improve the inoculation effect of molten iron, thereby enhancing the mechanical properties of castings.
Processing method:
Raw pyrite may require simple crushing or screening treatment before use to meet the particle size requirements of the casting process.

The price of raw ore pyrite is usually lower because it is naturally extracted.

Ferrous sulfide is the product of iron sulfide treated by electric furnace or other smelting processes.
Its sulfur content may have decreased (generally between 23% and 35%), but its purity is higher and it may contain other trace elements.
Purpose:
Ferrous sulfide is also used as a sulfur enhancer or other additive in certain specific situations.
It is an important sulfurizing agent product in the smelting of gray cast iron, which can improve the mechanical properties, inoculation effect, and graphite morphology of gray cast iron.
Processing method:
The smelted pyrite has been refined and purified during the production process, resulting in a more uniform and stable particle size, shape, and chemical composition.
Casting requirements:
If the casting process has high requirements for sulfur iron and requires high-purity sulfur iron or specific chemical composition, then ferrous sulfide may be more suitable.
Cost considerations:
Ferrous sulfide requires smelting treatment, which results in relatively high costs.
